"Caravan" - Live Latin and Spanish Guitar Cover - Vincenzo Martinelli
This live guitar version of "Caravan" as it appears on my El Toro album, is a reworked, Latin guitar infused track made famous by the legendary jazz pianist, Duke Ellington. http://www.vincenzomartinelli.com/el-toro/

Composed by Juan Tizol, it is regarded as a jazz standard. The song has been covered by jazz greats such as Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Gordon Jenkins, and Johnny Mathis. Woody Allen has used this song in two of his movies, Alice and Sweet and Low Down, and it is also heavily featured in the 2014 hit movie, Whiplash. There are more than 350 recordings of this piece by Duke Ellington’s orchestra and many of these are now in the public domain.
I first heard the original version the way I was going to produce this song in the studio of John Roy in Australia. He had composed an experimental track that was infused with Latino and Middle Eastern sounds I immediately recognized as being able to work on the song that I know as Caravan. I asked him kindly if I could use what he had already arranged as my background for the adaptation of the song that I then recorded for my El Toro album.
I really enjoyed recording this song and the way it has a lot of exotic and vibrant rhythms throughout the piece. It almost sounds Arabic or Middle Eastern in flavour, infused with a Latin guitar rhythm track all the way throughout.
Caravan is very enjoyable to play, and my audiences really respond well to a song that they are obviously familiar with treated in such a way. The song played live always brings about a great and heartfelt reaction. It remains very well suited to my repertoire, and people everywhere really enjoy it.
The techniques I used to record Caravan incorporate a lot of rhythms on various styles of guitars – 12-string, steel string, nylon string, and flamenco guitar, all of which I myself played on this recording! I use a specific rhythmic technique known as rasgueado on several of the rhythm tracks. The song also features a recording of strings, and a very interesting and exotic vocalization in the Indian style after the first verse.
The song makes one feel almost like dancing, and is hypnotic in nature, and was a pleasure to record. It has been arranged in a particular way to really suit the guitar, however it is easily recognizable as Ellington’s Caravan. It’s always a surprise to audiences when I announce this song! They expect something more contemporary if you will, in the jazz vein. However once it is delivered in this Latino-exotic-middle eastern style, it always garners a great response.
