Fallschirmsegeln Amel 54 Parachute Sailing
ungewöhnlich, einfach und komfortabel
unusal, simple and comfortable
manual for special wishes from sailers:
Parachute use on a sailing yacht:
Model T-10, approx. 80 square meters / 10 m diameter (lying flat), 28 lines
- Split / bundle the lines into "upper" and "lower" halves
- Combine the ends of the "bundles" with an eye / thimble
- Connect both eyes with a permanent line (sheet or similar) in the length of half the canopy diameter (to fix the distance while flying)
- Lay out the parachute neatly and carefully on deck, check all lines, parachute in leeward position, lines to windward (downwind course)
- Attach the thimble of the upper lines to the spinnaker halyard
- Attach the thimble of the lower lines to an extra long sheet (guided on the bowsprit with a roller or low friction ring, must be able to rotate freely to both sides), steer it into the cockpit on a strong winch, leave the sheet relatively short for the time being
- Set a course so that the parachute can keep itself free from shrouds, stays, railings etc. (between broad reach and downwind)
- Quickly set the spinnaker halyard over the winch, let the parachute unfold
- Adjust the halyard and sheet so that the main pull direction is diagonally upwards, the parachute flies approx. 10m in front of the bow, the main pull is on the bow / sheet
- good "flyable" up to approx. 30 ° deviation of the wind direction from the direct downwind course and from at least 8kn to approx. 25kn apparent wind speed
- Control of the parachute pressure by ease the sheet (opening for less pressure)
- Achievable boat speed (monohull, 20 tons displacement) approx. 1/3 wind speed, only little trim effort, parachute adapts automatically to wind shifters, only very little rolling movements, relaxed sailing over a very wide range of wind strengths
- Attention when recovering, the most demanding part !: Ideally, at least a 2-man crew should bring the parachute leeward of the set genoa (collapse the parachute, pull it on deck, initially using the sheet), never drop the parachute into the water or let it turn; If necessary, wait for wind cover / less wind, plan route / use of the paraglider accordingly in advance, determine exit strategy (ease sheet / fall, etc.).
Flown on the Atlantic crossing in January 2020 and from Grenada to Aruba on an Amel 54.
With many thanks for the instructions and tips to
Aideen and Peter from Petima.
