Pandit Suresh Talwalkar’s exciting interpretation of the patterns woven by Pandit Kashalkar on the tabla is incredible. Sameehan Kashalkar joins his father with refrains on the songs and improvisations. Pandit Kashalkar deploys short and crisp bol-banav and taans bringing this raga to a resounding and exciting conclusion. Chinmay Kolhatkar gives a pleasing support on the harmonium.

The word Sohini means enchantress. Its persona reminds of springtime -ragas like Basant, Paraj and Hindole. According to many, this raga is not as old as its look-alike sisters -ragas Maarwa and Puriya. It deviously touches komal Re (flat 2nd ) in the ascent, whereas the descending order displays it directly. Sohini also deploys teevra Ma (sharp 4th ) in its descent. The dominant note is Dha (6th) and the sub-dominant is Ga (3rd).

Unlike Puriya and Maarwa, Sohini is best suited for exposition in medium or fast tempos because slow tempo does not suit the character of the raga. It evokes the ‘Shringaar rasa’ or a sensual mood.

Musicians
Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar (khayal)
Pandit Suresh Talwalkar (tabla)
Sameehan Kashalkar (supporting vocals and tanpura)
Chinmay Kolhatkar (harmonium)
Priya Prakash (tanpura)
