Day of the Dead Altar at Mexican Cultural Institute 2019 3D 180 VR

This 3D 180 VR video provides a look at the altar that was on display at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington DC during its annual Day of the Dead event, which was held on Saturday, November 2. 2019. Created by DC-based Mexican artist Enrique Quiroz, this altar was dedicated to the 22 people who lost their lives in the El Paso shooting last August. The altar also honored prominent Mexican figures who passed away this year, including artist Francisco Toledo, humanitarian Miguel León Portilla, and singer José José. The sign next to the altar says this:

EL PASO STRONG: Dia de Muertos altar by Enrique Quiroz of Catrinas Corazén

"Inspired by the prismas basalticos from the state of Hidalgo in Mexico, and by the talavera tiles from the azulejos room, I bring to you my conceptual Altar de Dia de Muertos. Bright colourful contours of papel cempasuchil highlight the two structures consisting of 7 levels of an ofrenda, two on each side, representing the two sister cities, El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. In the middle stands a traditional altar with two colors, orange and yellow, representing la frontera. The kites floating above serve as vehicles for the souls of the dead to come and visit. The three Mexican hearts signify the divine trinity and the yearning for our loved ones that have passed away; a desert of cactus to symbolize that even in the harshest of environments, beauty still grows. The Catrina Garbancera reminds us of the simple message that no matter how rich or poor we are, at the end of the day we all turn into bones ... death doesn’t discriminate, jala parejo! And the most important thing: Love never dies if you remember the loved ones inside of you. Let’s be more like the Cigarras, go through life singing what is left of our lives. This altar is dedicated to all those souls that tragically left this world at El Paso, Tx on August 3rd, 2019."
