Upgrade Unraid Server To 10700k

My Unraid server has been running on a reliable 7700k for over a year now, and needed an upgrade for some more horsepower. I don't really want to pay the extra money for a Xeon solution, not to mention they are multiplier locked, so I chose to go with a 10th gen Intel 10700k.

Along with the CPU I decided to go with the Gigabyte Z240 Vision D motherboard. This is one of the few motherboards that offer 3 m.2 NVME slots (one used for right now and two more for future upgrades), and also had the 3 x16 PCIE slots (my setup will be running 8x/8x/4x) with the last slot available for a future upgrade if needed.

I already had 64GB of DDR-4 3200Mhz ram so I just swapped that over from the 7700K motherboard.

Finally for cooling I decided to go with a Noctua NH-12S, and added on a Noctua 120mm redux fan I had laying around to aid with thermals and give the heatsink a push-pull configuration. This heatsink just barely fits in the Supermicro 846 case.

As for overclocking, I was after a modest overclock and still needed 100% stability since this is for a server, not a gaming PC. I ended up with a 4.9Ghz all core, with adaptive voltage and allowing the cores to idle down when not doing any work to conserve on power. The CPU could definitely do 5.1Ghz or more if I decided to go with water cooling (which I did not want to do with this build), but at the same time upping the clock speed much more then 4.9Ghz wouldn't give as much of a boost in performance the higher you go.

I chose to stay with Intel with this build instead of following the vast majority of youtuber's that go the Ryzen route since I use Intel quicksync with my plex server and quicksync is much more energy efficient then throwing in a dedicated GPU for transcoding.
