Sprinkler layout: The how and why

Sprinkler layout involves critical steps in irrigation design to achieve water distribution uniformity. Required design steps before sprinkler layout include having an objective for irrigation, locating a source of water, site assessment, measuring the size of landscape areas, choosing a sprinkler radius that will fit each area independently, and choosing a layout pattern, either square or equilateral. Sprinklers must be spaced the distance of their radius of coverage, and partial (quarter-circle and half-circle) arc sprinklers must be placed at the corners and around the perimeter of each landscape irrigation area, usually before placing full-circle arc sprinklers in the interior. Only after sprinklers are laid out in the irrigation drawing, sprinklers are assigned to zones, pipes are sized and routed, and remote valves placed near the mainline. Sprinkler layout must occur in a precise sequence with other irrigation design steps, otherwise mistakes are made and one would have start the project all over again.
