A marathon show, well over 3 hours and a lot of numbers rarely played.
Numbers who will get dropped as the tour progress.
This is again a fantastic Mike Millard recording so the sound and atmosphere is well captured.

Our series carries on with a doozy, Elton Johnís epic 31-song set at the Sports Arena in San Diego on a tour cleverly dubbed West Of The Rockies in dual recognition of the album he was supporting (Rock Of The Westies) and the tourís routing throughout the Pacific and Mountain time zones. San Diego was the first arena show of the tour, coming a month after Elton returned to his roots with a stand at The Troubadour for the clubís fifth anniversary.

The West of the Rockies tour would famously conclude with Elton playing two nights at Dodger Stadium, a moment recreated in the recent film Rocket Man. Curiously, a ticket stub for the Saturday, October 25 concert at Dodger Stadium is inside one of the four San Diego cassettes, but Mike apparently did not record the show as it isnít on his list.

But he was in prime position in San Diego, recording from the 7th row of the A section. Because it is opening night of the proper tour, Eltonís setlist was still a work in progress, meaning we get songs here that wouldnít survive to the end of the run including ìStreet Kids,î ìHave Mercy On The Criminalî and ìBetter Off Dead.î It also features what Elton calls the first ever performance of ìHarmony.î EJ spends plenty of time talking to the audience about the songs, the show and himself, all of which is utterly charming. His ease and comfort makes for a great listening experience of the full concert.

The San Diego performance is truly first rate and captures Elton at a career peak, with generous dips into Captain Fantastic, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and even the title track of his debut, Empty Sky, presumably played because the album was finally released in the U.S. in January 1975. We also get a double-shot of Beatles covers, ìLucy In The Sky With Diamondsî and ìI Saw Her Standing There (with the ìI Feel Fineî guitar riff thrown in for good measure). Elton had played the latter with John Lennon at Madison Square Garden the previous November. It was also the b-side to ìPhiladelphia Freedom.î
