K-12 Teachers Workshop on Afghan Fall 2021

Speakers: Dr. Shah Mahmoud Hanifi (James Madison University), Ms. Atifa Rawan (Librarian Emerita), Ms. Malika Akbary (UArizona student)

The United States is receiving an influx of at least 51,000 Afghan refugees, including many families with school-aged children who have been through a traumatic experience. Our schools need to be ready. K-12 teachers from all over the United States are invited to a workshop to learn about Afghanistan and the refugee experience from an Afghan student’s perspective. Professor Shah Mahmoud Hanifi of James Madison University will talk about Afghan history; Atifa Rawan, librarian emerita at the University of Arizona will explain some aspects of Afghan culture, and undergraduate student Malika Akbary will talk about her experiences coming to Tucson as a child refugee, and matriculating into the local school system.

This workshop is for Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers and administrators who are interested in learning about Afghanistan and the experience of coming to the US as an Afghan child refugee.
