David Le'Aupepe from Gang of Youths opening for Chris Cornell, Sydney Opera House 11/12/15

Gang of Youths. These friends and legends are right up there in the mix of my favourite bands to come out of Australia. Aside from being one of the most hardworking bands around - possessing a stellar live act whilst producing beautiful, honest, raw and powerful music with 'hit you in the face (and heart)' lyrics - they are also such quality human beings who I have so much respect and admiration for.

With Chris Cornell being my favourite male vocalist (may he rest in peace), I'd planned on being at his Higher Truth solo show in Sydney loooooong before I found out GOY's lead singer Dave Le'Aupepe had been asked to open for the man himself. How unbelievable! Was so excited to get there early to see his set and it was even more incredible than I could have imagined.

This guy is dynamite. It was just him and his guitar, singing stripped back versions of Gang of Youths songs and some covers and he blew us all away. What a voice! What a presence! He owned that stage and the crowd were loving every minute of it. I heard people who'd walked in later saying, "F***, I wish I'd been here sooner!" and a lot of others muttering sentiments along the lines of, "Who IS this guy?!?!?" and "Where did he come from?!?!" It was sooooo, soooo good and I felt so proud and privileged to have been there to see it. I have no doubt that Gang of Youths gained a whole allegiance of new fans that night. No doubt whatsoever.

Here's Dave performing his cover of 'The Book of Love' by the Magnetic Fields and also GOY's own 'Poison Drum' (3:16). I hope you enjoy this as much as those of us who were there that night did.
