2011-2015 Chevy Volt: Diagnosing battery cell issues with VCX Nano and GDS 2

Here we show how to use a VCX Nano OBD2 adapter and GM GDS 2 software to scan and diagnose issues with a bad battery cell group in a 2011 Chevy Volt. The trick is to do these checks on a battery that is just finishing charging and then repeat the process when you deplete the charge. Look for one or more battery cell groups that overcharge by a small amount. when you run out of battery-only range you should scan the car and look for one or more cell groups that is significantly lower in voltage than the rest. There are 96 cell groups.

If you buy a VCX Nano pay a few bucks more and buy the one with Wifi capability since the micro USB port on the VCX Nano is too small for reliable long term use. Wifi is robust and the range is safely 10M in my experience.
