While most understand the importance of being able to have some degree of separation between the pelvis and the torso, a very critical piece of a high velocity delivery is being able to accept and redirect that energy through the upper body, from the torso being able to separate away from the arm.

During torso rotation, the arm lags behind, creating a stretch into layback that stores elastic energy and when timed correctly, that stored energy rebounds from segment to segment, producing velocity with far less effort required from the arm itself, which, in my eyes, leads to a much more efficient throw to go and perform consistently week to week.

I have mentioned this in plenty of posts in the past, but the idea of relaxation in the throw is an absolute game changer for being able to allow the arm to maximize the loading that happens within the upper body itself. The excess tension of an arm action that is muscled up and tense shortens the overall stretch and loading potential of the arm and torso and forces the arm to have to try and create speed rather than releasing the energy that was already built in the previous segments of the throw.

Take a look at the videos above of my athlete Ben Simon (Mets Org). His entire on ramp and build up process has been built on the foundation of relaxation and timing. He does a lot of things well, but one of the reasons he is able to get up into the upper 90's is due to how efficient he is able to transfer velocity between each segment and then finally out into the arm which he does at an extremely high level.

One of the best ways I have found to train this with a lot of guys is through the use of pens, where the focus is less on chasing a peak number each session and more on controlling a floor velocity. That approach allows us to progressively make that velocity easier week to week while attacking important pieces of the delivery through daily drill work and simultaneously building a more robust engine outside of throwing to handle the capacity required to execute these movements efficiently. While this process isn't as fun as just ripping pullys with the boys, I find that this process has been huge on making patterns stick in the long run for a lot of the guys that I work with, especially those who already have a great foundation built.

What is Tread? A message from Tread's Co-Founder, Ben Brewster

If you're new to this channel, my name is Ben Brewster, and since 2015 my partner Coan and I have run Tread Athletics, a remote pitching development company that has impacted thousands of high school, college and professional pitchers' careers.

Here's my story: at 15, I was just a driven but naive kid with a dream of playing at the highest level. This took me down a wild path, that included:

-Getting cut from travel teams and throwing low 70s as a 6'3" 155lb freshman.
-Being unrecruited out of high school (seriously, not a single offer to pitch in college).
-Landing a walk-on spot at the University of Maryland & earning a degree in Exercise Science.
-Getting drafted by the Chicago White Sox and throwing 98+ mph from the left side.
-Pushing through 5 surgeries in my late 20's, despite people telling me to throw in the towel.

Seeing that very few pitchers, like myself, had access to the types of instructors and information locally that would truly make a difference in their careers, Tread's remote coaching was born.

Today: Tread oversees the development of over 1,500 amateur and 500+ pro pitchers around globe (check out our interactive athlete map it's pretty cool), and has become home to over 50 of the top Pitching coaches in the world.

Our staff operates out of a 33,000 square foot training facility in Charlotte, NC that includes one of the top private pitching labs, a biomechanics team, world-class sports medicine staff & more, as we work to lead the charge on building better, healthier pitchers.

While my own playing career has been defined by more setbacks than successes, these personal struggles give me a crystal clear perspective that Tread isn't just about building superior pitchers – it's about fighting toward a shared dream; whether that means making your high school team, landing a college scholarship, signing a pro contract or debuting in the big leagues.

For these players, I'm all in -- let's continue to pursue the dream together.
