High Wind Hravn Racing Governor's Point 2019 J109 sailing 25 to 38 knots windy fun - peter hallett
Sailboat racing J109 Hravn in high wind with 9 minutes of fast downwind sailing including a near overboard situation (floating inside the lifelines) and 9 minutes upwind in 25 30 35 knots of wind.
Sail changes reducing sail from full main and #3 jib, asym spinnaker up, then down, then reef into main in the lee of Vendovi Island, blasting across south end of Bellingham Bay with wind 30 to 35 knots, then furling jib and reaching with only reefed main, then #3 unrolled, then with that sail damaged and with too much sail area, replaced with #4 jib...and then sailed around Chuckanut Island (Dot Island) added a second reef in the main sail, lots of heeling and spray, and then dropping the main completely and completing the race with #4 jib only...awesome race in which three boats retired and return to Bellingham, two boats retired downwind to Anacortes because of damage or difficulty continuing upwind and only two boats completed the race: Vitesse (nice sailing Dave!) and Hravn (thank you, Todd - A Good Time Every Time)
in this sailing video you will see:
9 minutes downwind
9 minutes upwind
enjoy the action...downwind, high winds, reefing, sail changes, nearly a crew overboard MOB and second place (only two boats finished)
this sailing shot in 4K with Sony sports videocam that was often in my mouth...Peter Hallett point of view, other than the very last clip shot by Rick with his phone. I love Carl,s comment in that final section: "That's so Hravn!" (we crew all have a specific mutation, which makes this fun)
