Charcoal Portrait Drawing, RISD Art Professor Demo

RISD Adjunct Professor Clara Lieu demonstrates how to draw a portrait in charcoal working with an artist model who poses in real life. Lieu shows the process of drawing thumbnail sketches, important techniques for creating dynamic drawing compositions. Specific tools for drawing with charcoal are explained in depth, as well as drawing techniques for showing lighting, shadow using the cross-hatching drawing method.

Clara Lieu is an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China.
