In this series of videos I cover Jazz Piano Improvisation techniques. I'll explain, from start to finish, how you can learn to improvise over a jazz song and sound professional.
This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about how first to begin playing jazz improvising. Before you learn any Jazz improvisation techniques, you need to learn how to play within the key of the song. I cover only how to start playing 'inside' the key or scale in this video. It's important to learn how to play inside before you practice creating tension by playing outside (and then resolving inside).
Most beginners when they first starting trying to improve end up playing a scale up and down the chord progression. This is fine to begin with but is not really improvisation. So in this video I go over ways to begin to expand your improvisation to include some other ideas and techniques like creating phrases and using harmony.
The ideas I cover are:
Play scale and exercises
Change Direction
Change Rhythms
Change Pitch
Change Duration of notes (triplets)
Change Dynamics
Skip Notes
Circle notes
Silence is ok (thinking time)
Single Notes
Repetition & Sequencing
Use Arpeggios
Use Phrases & Pause between Phrases
Start Phrases off the beat
Call and response
Theme and Variation
Harmonising - use more than 1 note
Use Riffs
Use ornamentals - turns, trills, etc
Use Melody (separate video)
Use Guide Tone (separate video)
Cliches/Quotes (separate video)
Avoid ‘Avoid Notes’ (separate video)
