Male Lions Attack Cubs
Lionesses in a pride often have cubs around the same time as each other and look after them in a group. When it is time to give birth, Lionesses leave the pride to find a private den such as a cave or a shelter of bushes. Female Lions do this until their young is at least a few weeks old. Before then, they are extremely vulnerable to predators and hostile interactions from intruding lions who would kill the cubs to ensure the Lioness goes into oestrus. They could even fall victim to an overly excited, curious member of the pride, as young male Lions 'play' extremely rough.
