Stop Motion Tutorial: Sticker Mouth Lip Sync Animation

I have another tutorial on lip sync using clay, and while the results can be impressive, it is admittedly time-consuming. Replacement mouths using stickers is a time- and budget-friendly alternative. This tutorial explores the process of creating a puppet head, a set of mouths, an exposure sheet, and the animation itself. I don’t cover too many of the principles of lip sync, as that was covered more in the clay animation tutorial. That one as well as “Facial Animation” would be good companions to this tutorial.

Software: iStopmotion (Mac only) is a good frame-capturing app for the price. Studios tend to use Dragonframe, which runs on both Windows and Mac. But the techniques and principles discussed in this tutorial will work with a phone running an app like Stop Motion Studio. BTW: Studios like Stoopid Buddy may appear to be using sticker mouths, but most of the time (including some of the examples in this video) they are done digitally using After Effects.

Shopping for Puppet-Making:
Clay (Van Aken, Sculpy III), armature wire, cotton batting to build up puppet: Arts/craft store or amazon.com.

16-gauge aluminum armature wire (from an art store or Amazon, not the hardware store)
Epoxy putty (Hardware store)

Cotton batting or foam (quilting supplies from craft or sewing store)
For the head, aluminum foil or wood ball (craft store)
