Boris Johnson has insisted his government “did everything we could” to limit coronavirus deaths and said he was “deeply sorry” after the UK toll exceeded 100,000 on nearly every metric. But faced with questions over how Britain reached one of the world’s worst counts amid the pandemic, the prime minister refused to discuss the reasons it might be so high.

Minister for Cabinet Office Michael Gove appeared on today’s Good Morning Britain, where he discussed the return to schools, vaccinations and mistakes the Government has made.
