The Pendulum and Floquet Theory

This lecture is part of a series on advanced differential equations: asymptotics & perturbations. This lecture explores the stability of periodic solutions in dynamical systems, specifically, the periodically driven pendulum. We show that Floquet theory allows for stabilization of the pendulum in the inverted position provided the driving frequency is sufficiently large.
