... I think the most difficult thing for Jerry was to find the form - the structure - of the ballet. He approached each section as a musical whole, and then had to work out the sequence in a way that was theatrically sound. It is my feeling that the dances could have been placed in any order, even though the way it evolved resulted in what is very much a classical pas de deux structure: pas de deux, variations, variations, coda. He didn't use many verbal or psychological descriptions to elicit from us what he wanted. Sometimes he would say something as brief as 'This is a military variation', or 'This pose is like a late 19th century photograph; try and get that feeling'. But basically the whole ballet is just a musical idea. It was born of and lives inside the music. Jerry understands it that way.
