France’s Tank Train Explained | The Overengineered Armored Vehicle That Never Existed #history #tech

France’s Tank Train Was So Advanced… It Never Even Reached The Battlefield.

This video explores one of the strangest armored vehicle concepts in military history Victor-Barthélemy Jacquet’s Train d’Assaut, an articulated multi-segment tank designed in the final years of World War II.

From France’s legendary Renault FT to the modern Leclerc main battle tank, French armored engineering has shaped warfare for decades. But hidden in a little-known 1940s patent lies an idea so ambitious that it pushed far beyond the limits of its time.

The Train d’Assaut imagined a mechanically linked, three-section armored vehicle that moved more like a centipede than a conventional tank. Each cabin featured its own tracks, suspension, and turret, all connected through multi-axis hydraulic articulation. On paper, this allowed the vehicle to climb near-vertical obstacles, cross massive trenches, and maintain traction where traditional tanks would fail.

Designed by outsider engineer Victor-Barthélemy Jacquet, the concept aimed to solve real battlefield problems such as obstacle crossing and extreme terrain mobility. However, its complexity, outdated suspension choices, massive crew requirements, and post-war economic realities meant it never advanced beyond drawings.

Despite never being built, the Assault Train accidentally predicted the future. Modern unmanned systems, articulated vehicles, and digitally controlled drivetrains now make similar ideas practical without the human and mechanical limitations Jacquet faced.

This video breaks down:

• The modular multi-segment tank design
• How hydraulic articulation would have worked
• Crew layout, armament, and protection concepts
• Why the Assault Train was ultimately abandoned
• What modern engineers can still learn from it

A fascinating example of how bold imagination sometimes arrives decades too early.
