Mercedes-Benz GLE 400d 4Matic Test Review
Although not the largest SUV in the Mercedes stable, the GLE is certainly a large and substantial vehicle in all the best ways. Offering massive space and comfort for 5 or 7 passengers in typical Mercedes comfort, style and safety.
We tested the GLE 300d at the end of 2019, so many of the aspects of the car are identical to that test. Here is the link to our video review of the 300d for you to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bf-9IvCMAw
Bearing in mind that this is the actual model derivative that was the runner-up in the 2020 SAGMJ Car of the Year competition, the differences are all about the engine. Whilst the 300d is not lacking in power from its 2L turbodiesel engine, the 400d brings a 3l 6 cylinder to the party giving you 243kW and 700Nm of torque to provide extra growl and effortless cruising ability. The increases of 63kW and 200Nm make far more difference than I was expecting.
The power is always smoothly transmitted to all 4 wheels through the superb 9 speed automatic transmission. As always, I will have to criticize the stalk operation for the gearshift. I may be finally getting used to this, but still have to pause for thought every time I want to indicate a lane change.
Immediately after the 400d landed on the driveway, I took it out on my fuel economy route and returned a very respectable 7.4L/ 100km. Economy for the full test period was 8.7L/100km which I deem very acceptable for the bulk and power combination. Again, to compare, the 300d returned 9.3L/100km for the test period.
As expected at this level of the market, every luxury and safety technology available is provided starting with 9 airbags, plus every conceivable driving aid to ensure the safety of occupants.
The GLE 400d is currently priced at R1.5 million, but as always the extras can add to this figure. A 5 year/ 100 000km full maintenance plan is included.
