Tesla FSD Simulation = Tesla Fail?? Tesla AI Day part 2

During Tesla's AI day, Ashok Elluswamy, director of Autopilot Software at Tesla, showed how Tesla uses simulation to help train their Autopilot Full Self Driving (or FSD) for the Tesla fleet. Many in the media, including Gordon Johnson, have reamed Tesla for revealing that they are failing in their quest to solve FSD as they have to use simulations to do so. As it happens, I have 25 years experience and multiple publications in this area, so I think I can adequately answer the question, does using simulations to help train their network mean that Tesla has failed at full self driving?
