Meet 30+ language hyperpolyglot Jared Gimbel — and learn his secrets!
This episode is a really special one, folks — my friend and hyperpolyglot Jared Gimbel generously agreed to sit down and chat with me a couple days ago, and the guy is just incredible. He’s lived all around the world but despite speaking only English as his native language has somehow managed to self-study his way to conversational fluency in 18 languages and acquaintance with a dozen others. Jared is the language geek’s language geek, and he’s just an unbelievable wealth of knowledge about all things linguistic — I had to cut a ton of amazing material to keep it focused*, but people, if you have an interest in the language learning process or cool facts about obscure or endangered languages, do check out his remarkable blog at https://worldwithlittleworlds.wordpress.com/. It’s got huge amounts of amazing content on subjects ranging from whether one language is harder than another to an introduction to the Tajiki language (yes, that’s a thing), all written by a guy who has an unusually high degree of experience in language learning, so very worth reading and subscribing to!
The episode is long and it’s definitely worth watching in full, but if you’re short on time you can skip to the parts you find most interesting:
0:16 — Introduction and Jared’s life story
3:04 — The tools Jared uses daily to maintain the dozens of languages he’s studied
6:52 — Jared’s day job teaching Nordic languages and the biggest mistakes his students run into
8:42 — How Jared likes turning language learning into playing video games
10:40 — Conclusion and where you can stay in touch with Jared’s adventures

And the musicians Jared mentions are Sammy Saeni (Sharzy, from the Solomon Islands) and Daniel Bilip (Papua New Guinea).

Including his video where he speaks 31 languages, so be sure to subscribe to his channel for an even better version of that video coming up soon!
* I might have to make a part 2, so stay tuned!
And keep studying those languages, because as Jared says:
“Is fearr Gaeilge bhriste, ná Béarla cliste.”
(Broken Irish is better than clever English)
