The Placenta Isn't Working Alone: Do Fetal Membranes Metabolize Drugs? | e-Journal Club Ep. 2

🔬 EPISODE 2 — Do the Fetal Membranes Metabolize Drugs?

For decades the placenta has been treated as the main organ that breaks down drugs and toxins during pregnancy. This week's paper asks whether a second tissue — the fetal membranes — carries a working drug-metabolizing enzyme system of its own. Using RNA sequencing, confirmation by a separate gene-expression method, and enzyme activity assays, the authors report that the membranes carry nearly the same cytochrome P450 repertoire as the placenta — and that key enzymes are functionally active.

Dr. Kammala is the first author on this paper. This episode discusses his own lab's work, presented in journal-club format for open discussion.

🎯 THIS WEEK'S OPEN QUESTION
How convincing do you find the step from gene expression to demonstrated enzyme function? And how might this protective system behave during infection or inflammation — the very conditions linked to preterm birth? Drop your take in the comments.

If this episode hits 50 likes, I'll release a longer breakdown — a cell-by-cell map of which membrane layers do the metabolizing, and what the open questions are.
