In her new book “Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics” (Templeton Press, 2019), writer and social critic Mary Eberstadt argues that the extended family has always been the fundamental source of human identity. But as sexual liberation has contributed to the decline of the family, generations of people have been set adrift in society, unable to find purpose and belonging. Without the organic family, they have created identity-based tribes in which they can begin to build some sense of self. This has led to identity politics and a culture of perpetual outrage.
