*Khanpur Dam* is a reservoir dam on the Haro River in Khanpur, Haripur District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It’s about 40-50 km northwest of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Key facts
*Purpose*: Supplies drinking water to Islamabad–Rawalpindi and irrigation water to surrounding agricultural and industrial areas.
*Built*: Construction started ∼1968, completed in 1983 and opened in 1984. Took 15 years and cost ₨1.385 billion at the time.
*Structure*: 51 m high / 167 ft, with a total capacity of 79,980 acre-ft (98.65 million m³).
*Reservoir*: Forms *Khanpur Lake*.

Tourism & activities
The lake sits in a gorge surrounded by hills and Pothohar Plateau mountains, making it a popular day-trip spot.

- Visits to the 200-year-old Rajgan Mosque on a small island

*Hours*: Mon-Thu 08:00-19:00, Fri-Sun 08:00-20:00
*Access*: ∼1.5 hrs from Islamabad via N-5 and N-125. There’s an off-road route over the Margalla Hills from D-12 if you have a 4x4.
*Food*: Limited facilities on site, most people bring their own picnic. Fresh fish is available at some lakeside restaurants.

Notes
- Don’t confuse it with *Khanpur City* in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab - that’s a different place.
Swimming isn’t officially allowed, and littering is a concern in peak season.
- You can visit the turbines and spillways with permission from dam authorities.
