New Dawn Fades - Gothik Serpent Cover

My first encounter with this Joy Division tune was Moby's cover in the 1995 crime epic Heat, when Detective Hanna pursues Neil McCauley on the 105 freeway in Los Angeles. After discovering the original, I quickly fell in love with its dark, atmospheric tone along with the rest of the Unknown Pleasures repertoire.

When I started playing music a few years later, New Dawn Fades was one of the first songs I covered with my band thanks to its easy-to-learn chord progression and increasing levels of intensity. A decade later, and I figured it was time to do a full-blown recording of it.

The Gothik Serpent version combines elements of the album version, which is moody and cavernous, and the live version, which is faster and heavier. The first third of the tune is closer to the album version, and as the song progresses, the tempo increases, the reverb subsides, and the guitars ramp up the intensity as the transition to the live version gets underway.
