Can Data Analysis from Wearables Improve Stroke Rehabilitation? #shorts

Can wearable technology and AI improve stroke rehabilitation at home? In this video, Alissia Di Maria, a student in Harvard's Data Science master's program, shares how machine learning and wrist-worn sensors can help track recovery for post-stroke patients beyond the clinic.

Working in Harvard SEAS Professor Conor Walsh’s BioDesign Lab, this project focused on using continuous home monitoring to measure how patients actually use their affected limbs in daily life, not just during weekly therapy visits. By distinguishing purposeful arm movements from passive motion and detecting whether prescribed exercises were being completed, the system provides therapists with more accurate, actionable insights into patient progress.

The work highlights the growing potential of AI, wearable technology, and real-world health data to support recovery, improve patient morale, and give people greater agency over their health.
