Phd Study with me | Literature Review || Twenty-Minute Writing Tool (no music, real time)
Hi guys. If you are studying for a PhD, and perhaps - like me - are wading through the literature at the moment, you might find this short writing tool useful.
Once or twice a week, put aside twenty minutes to write freely, for yourself. No bullet points, full sentences. Specifically, answer the following questions:
1. What are you READING?
What articles did you read this week? Who were the authors? What were the main findings of this research? Were there any particular strengths or weaknesses in the articles? [try to avoid going back, just write what you remember]
2. What are you THINKING?
How has your own research angle changed, or been impacted, by the information garnered from this week's articles? Is your own research becoming a little clearer, or more defined, as you read a little more, as the days progress?
3. What are you DOING?
... Or, what will you do - now that you've reflected on this week's reading. Where to next? Who to review in the literature now? Would you benefit from continuing with the theme from this week, or will you look at a different branch of the literature?
Study with me in real time : twenty minutes, just writing. No matter what stage you are at in your PhD, I hope you find this useful. I came across it at a PhD working shop led by Dr Daniel Soule, but I think the technique is a common tool used by academic students. Correct me if I'm wrong and I'll happily give credit to where it is due.
Let me what what you're reading/thinking/doing with regards to your PhD in the comments below. This is my first "study with me" video, and there are more on the way.
Best of luck with the literature review, and the PhD. We can do this!
