SCRIPT

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated former Marshal of the Soviet Union Dmitri Yazov on his 90th birthday, in Moscow Saturday.

The Russian head of state presented the Soviet military leader with the Order of Alexander Nevsky, an award given for his service in the patriotic education of youth and for strengthening the country's defence capabilities.

Putin thanked the former marshal and added that he was proud to spend the day with him and expressed his hopes that Yazov would continue to support soldiers in the Russian Army for years to come.

Dmitri Yazov was the last person to be appointed Marshal of the Soviet Union. He is also a veteran of the Great Patriotic War.
