This song was written by Peader Kearney in or around the time of the 1916 rising.
It was effectively a call to arms, telling the listener to seek inspiration from those who had risen in the past... although they may have failed, their spirit has never been beaten & now it was time to rise again.
This song has been performed by hundreds of different singers over the years. I particularly like the late Jim McCann's version.
