Denver has outgrown me, & it is time to move to greener pastures, literally. I will be spending my October moving my whole life to the Western Slope after 50+ years in the Denver area! The biggest move of my life. I am relocating to a small horse ranch between Grand Junction and Fruita.
The timing could not be better, my daughter is thriving in college at the School of Mines in Golden and, I have literally climbed most all of the mountains/routes that I have found attractive here on the east side of the Colorado Rockies. My growing attraction for relatively warm desert venues in the winter as well as my love for the San Juans Mountains were also big driving factors in my decision making.
In this video, I want to remind all mountaineers that Old Man Winter is now guarding the high peaks and his wrath can be very dangerous. He slapped me around pretty good on my last aborted climbing adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park. Despite feeling very strong and excited there was no prudent way for me to climb the technical ridge connecting Thatchtop and Powell Peaks above and to the southwest of Sky Pond in 60 MPH wind gusts and sub freezing wind chills. Be careful my friends, and I urge you to be extra picky about weather conditions, especially for climbs above timberline. Turing around is always a viable option, the mountain will be patiently waiting for your return.
