Tesla’s Model X has had the market for electric SUVs all to itself, and in a nation like Australia, where SUVs wearing a prestige badge represent the best chance of convincing buyers to pay over the odds for an EV, Telsa was never going to hold that monopoly for long. Following hot on the heels of Model X we’ve had the Jaguar I-PACE first, and more recently the Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 and now the Audi e-tron. The German models are priced within $200 of each other, although the e-tron is also available in upmarket specifications that are priced well above the entry-level variant’s price. Both the EQC and the e-tron deliver torque through all four wheels and store electrical power for each vehicle’s two motors in a lithium-ion battery pack. The respective manufacturers claim that their electric SUV is currently the pinnacle of practical electric motoring, and both vehicles are rated at a range of over 300km.
