Intertrigo is a condition where there is too much moisture in certain structural areas or closed spaces in the body which leads to a combination of bacterial or fungal infections. The most common reason for intertrigo are the neck folds in the newborn child, the buttock fold in the newborn child, the buttocks in adults, the region between the thigs and the groins, the groin fold , the area between the toes, that is in elderly people and these crowding of the toes, which leads to accumulation of sweat and water causing intertrigo. So the cause of intertrigo, when there is no air circulation in a particular area or there is too much of collection of sweat or water. This causes the skin to become soft and the barrier function of the skin which prevents the bacteria and fungus from infecting it is lost. The bacteria and fungus which are opportunistically waiting to infect the particular area affect these areas and cause a whitish discoloration and often lead to deep cuts and bleeding from the area and even pain and itching. It can be treated by keeping the area dry and using antifungals.
