Oiran Dochu Matsuri - Japanese Courtesan/Geisha Festival
Oiran were high-ranking cultured Japanese courtesans of the Edo Period (1603-1867). They would make grandiose processions in the pleasure quarter of Yoshiwara near Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa.
On the second Saturday in April, a parade of oiran is performed with kitsune (magical foxes). On a stage dances and sword play is done before a demonstration of an oiran meeting with a client is performed.
