A Life Elsewhere - This film is the special result of a meeting among persons who have a whole life to tell, and the author. Always woodcutter, Lorenzo has spent his whole life abroad, first in France and then in Switzerland. His body, doubled up for the toils of a lifetime, carries with lightness his seventy-three years of age on to the top of 40 metre high fir trees. And his work, in the endless expanse of beeches and fir trees of the Risoux, is scientific and impassioned. He lives alone since his wife has been hospitalised in a clinic in Lausanne and one of his sons died, victim of an accident in the woods. Anyway he has not lost his smiling personality; he loves nature and lives with irony and generosity his relationship with other emigrants. With them, in the wood, Lorenzo builds the coal pile for transforming the beech branches into coal trough the old custom performed in days and nights. The camera looks and listens to them with respect, and portraies an unforeseen world that seems remote to us, but shakes our about vain concepts.

Questo film è il risultato unico, speciale, di un incontro tra persone che hanno un'intera vita da raccontare e l'autore. Boscaiolo da sempre, Lorenzo ha trascorso tutta la sua vita all'estero, prima in Francia poi in Svizzera. Il corpo piegato in due da anni di fatiche, Lorenzo porta con leggerezza i suoi settantatré anni sulla cima di abeti da quaranta metri. E il suo lavoro, nella sterminata distesa di faggi e abeti del Risoux, è scientifico e appas-sionato. Vive solo, da quando la moglie è ricove-rata in clinica a Losanna e un figlio è rimasto vittima di un infortunio nel bosco. Eppure non ha perduto il sorriso; ama la natura, e vive con ironia e generosità il suo rapporto con altri emigranti. Con loro, nel bosco, Lorenzo allesti-sce la carbonaia per trasformare i rami di faggio in carbone attraverso l'antichissimo rituale com-piuto per giorni e per notti. La camera li guarda e li ascolta con rispetto, e ci restituisce un imprevisto mondo che ci appare remoto ma scuote nel profondo le nostre forse illusorie certezze

Il bosco dove il lavoro quotidiano diventa poesia. Una vita altrove è' un film coinvolgente perché immerge in una realtà, personaggi e ambienti, totalmente vera, dove la poesia ha la durezza della vita vissuta e fa tutt'uno con la natura, madre silente e misteriosa di tutti. Lorenzo, avvicinandosi con straordinaria naturalezza alla macchina da presa, taglia, sega, sfoltisce (arrampicandosi sui fusti, nonostante l'età). Vive solo, eroicamente incurvato, con lo scodinzolante cane Fen al fianco, da quando la moglie è stata ricoverata senza possibilità di uscita, in una clinica di Losanna. Cima riprende tutto ciò con amore senza enfasi, rinunciando a ogni orpello che non sia l'immagine nuda e cruda. Non v'è commento musicale, nè voce narrante, solo i rumori del lavoro e le voci dei boscaioli. Il linguaggio di Alberto Cima è scabro quanto intenso, uso a scavare negli animi per restituirne l'essenza sullo schermo. E' la via di Olmi, o del Piavoli di Voci nel tempo. Franco Colombo

"A life elsewhere" is an enthralling movie because it entwines characters and environments into a completely true reality where poetry presents the harshness of real life and becomes one with nature, silent and mysterious mother of everything.
Lorenzo, who approaches the camera in an exceptionally natural way and, we might add: he fells, saws, thins out (climbing trees the age notwithstanding), stacks wood.

He lives alone, heroically bent, with the waggling dog Fen next to him, since his wife, alas, has been hospitalised, we believe without possibilities of treatment, in a clinic of Lausanne. Cima films all this and more, with love and without emphasis, relinquishing all gewgaws, presenting only plain and blunt pictures.
There is no musical commentary nor voice over. You can only hear the noises of work: the chain saw, the zigzagging of the sickle, the engine of the truck used to transport logs; and the voices of the woodcutters.
His language is unpolished and intense, accustomed to delve hearts in order to render their essence on screen with affection and trust. In the tracks of Olmi, or Piavoli's "Voci nel tempo".
