Attempting to solve these antic problems may not be the best use of our technology. Cities are just tough, let public transport take care of that or last mile solutions, like the cool electric scooters... We need to take personal flying tech more seriously as that's where we're going in a few decades anyway. Let's start taking passenger drone technology more seriously, seriously!

Layoffs in the Autonomous Vehicle Industry-are we tackling the wrong problem?

Hello Friends

This is the second time in a short period that I do videos about layoffs,

I certainly hope it's not a harbinger of things to come.

Tesla laid off 3000 employees and Apple 200,
and the common thread here is that these are both in the autonomous vehicle space

Part of the problem I imagine is that the dream of fully self-driving cars isn't right at the corner. So, in the end, these are fancy electric cars full of little gadgets... and this may be reflected in the market.

SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineer) which came up with the levels-of-driving-automation, which uses as 6 level scale

level 0 - 5 (its zero-based - like a list python :-)

middle level - eyes off (2018 Audi on highways only)

But there are two more levels after that!

level 4 - mind off
level 5 robotic
So, we got the highways down, remember that Otto truck full of Budweiser beers driving over 100 miles in Colorado with nobody in the driver's seat?

But in cities, attempting to solve these antic problems may not be the best use of our time and technology. Cities are just too tough, let public transport take care of that or last mile solutions, like the cool electric scooters...

think about it, on a highway, a vehicle is moving along and watching for abnormalities, while in the city, everything is an abnormality. So the car starts moving only when it doesn't see any abnormality. This is a technological nightmare, and ethical one too, like the Trolley problem where your choice is based on the least bad one in case of emergencies, etc.

We need more of this!!!

Seriously, congested cities aren't made for autonomous cars, they're made for smaller, shared solutions. Anything bigger than that - should be done in the air...
