Fratton Park, Portsmouth (Pompey)
Fratton Park is a football ground in the English city of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. It has been the original and only home stadium of Portsmouth Football Club., who were founded on 5th April 1898.
The stadium is unique in English football in that it is currently the only professional football ground not on the mainland island of Great Britain, as it was built on Portsea Island, where the city of Portsmouth is located.
Fratton Park was built in 1899 on the site of a potato field in Milton, a farming village on Portsea Island which later became a residential district of Portsmouth, as the city expanded across the island during the twentieth century.
Fratton Park was first opened on a public open day on Tuesday 15th August 1899. The first ever football match at the ground was on the afternoon of Wednesday 6th September 1899; a 2-0 friendly win against Southampton FC, and was attended by a crowd of 4,141 supporters.
Fratton Park is named after Fratton railway station, which itself is a one-mile walk to the west in the neighbouring Fratton area. This peculiar naming was chosen to persuade fans that the football ground's true location in Milton was within easy reach of public transport.
Portsmouth FC are nicknamed Pompey, a nickname which it has adopted from the City of Portsmouth and the historic naval base of HMNB Portsmouth.
