HARRY NILSSON Did Somebody Drop His Mouse?
Officially unreleased documentary about the making of Harry Nilsson's "Son of Schmilsson" album.
The album "Son Of Schmilsson" was recorded (mostly) at Trident Studios, 17 St Anne's Court Soho in London in March 1972. The general consensus from the biography and people I've spoken to is that the narration from Harry and producer Richard Perry was recorded about a year later however having watched it dozens of times now I think it was recorded much later - probably 1976. There are a number of reasons I think this:
1. When Harry talks about guitarist Peter Frampton he says he was "young at the time". Why would he say this if it were only a year later? His " breakthrough best-selling live album, Frampton Comes Alive! (was released) in 1976" (wikipedia)
2. Harry says that since this album he has recorded another four albums with the same 'band'. So the 4 he must be talking about are Pussy Cats (1974), Duit On Mon Dei (1975), Sandman & That's The Way It Is (both 1976). I wonder even if it the narration was recorded in '77 as a last contractual obligation before he parted with RCA that year.
3. Harry talks about saxophonist Jim Price and says he has gone on to produce albums for Joe Cocker. A quick look at the JC discography reveals he must be talking about "I Can Stand A Little Rain" (1974) and "Jamaica Say You Will" (1975).
4. When we hear "Spaceman", Perry says 'Good Ol' Spaceman' - clearly some time has passed since the recording.
I'm not even convinced Harry and Richard did their voice-overs at the same time - there isn't any cross-talk between them.
In case you didn't know "Did Somebody Drop His Mouse?" roughly translates as "Did somebody break wind"!
This upload includes the 'missing' 46 seconds with the blank screen whilst Harry and Producer Richard Perry continue their narration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HGeqau2Zzs#t=742
I've also speeded the film up just a touch as I noticed the songs were at a lower pitch/slower than the released versions which suggested this may have been an error during the film transfer.
