The Hidden Rainbow of West China TRAILER

“The Hidden Rainbow of West China” is an unprecedented documentary about the rare Chinese Monal, an endangered mountain pheasant found only in China, that features never-before-seen video footage of this species. It is produced by Wild China Film, the first wildlife film production company in the country.
Distinguished by its colorful, dazzling plumage, the Chinese Monal lives between 2,300 meters to 4,900 meters – higher than most mountain pheasants. Because of its small population and extreme habitat, this bird is difficult to see in the wild and is still relatively unknown to scientists. But after spending more than two years filming, using a number of GoPro and trap cameras, Wild China's crew has capture on camera for the first time the bird's nesting and hatching behaviors.
The documentary follows the Chinese Monal through the different seasons, with a special focus on its breeding period, from the male's courtship rituals to the first steps of its chicks out of the nest. But life for the bird is not as easy as it may seem. Above the tree line, it's a harsh environment, and there are many hungry predators who threaten the young monals. Habitat loss is another big threat to the already small population, which has seen a steep decline over the past decades due to human activities such as poaching, deforestation and overgrazing. Faced with an abundance of dangers, the Chinese Monal's future is uncertain and faces the possibility of becoming extinct before we get to know them.
