Aerial Views of Lahaina Town in west Maui, Hawaii

Formerly the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, the west Maui oceanfront town of Lahaina is one of the most popular areas of The Valley Isle in terms of tourism, and an area full of rich historical significance and plenty of natural beauty: https://lahainatown.com/

Frequented by more than 2 million people per year, Lahaina Town is an excellent Maui location for surfing, boutique shopping, browsing local art galleries, enjoying a picnic in Banyan Tree Park, eating at one of the island’s top restaurants, catching a live music performance, having cocktails with a view, snorkeling and attending a Maui luau or sunset dinner cruise.

An area known for its significant cultural and historical importance, Lahaina once served as the center of the Hawaiian Kingdom after it was pronounced as the capital by King Kamehameha in 1802. Today, guests and local alike may learn more about the area by following the 28-site Lahaina Historic Walking Tour, including popular stops like the Baldwin Home Museum, Old Lahaina Lighthouse, Pioneer Inn, Hongwanji Mission and Wo Hing Museum, among others.

If you happen to catch yourself on Maui during the annual Halloween celebration - often called the ‘Mardi Gras of the Pacific’ - you’re in for a real treat, as Lahaina’s famous Front Street transforms into grounds for an annual Halloween parade, costume contests, live music and more local entertainment as thousands of people flock to the streets in their best costumes for a night of celebration.

Also in the same area, the remains of Mala Wharf are well known as being home to one of the island’s best dive sites. While it was largely abandoned due to heavy surf and strong currents that weren’t ideal for steamships shuttling in and out upon its completion in 1922, the 1992 Hurricane Iniki that struck the Hawaiian Islands is really what did it in.

Just a little further south, take time to explore the stunning Coral Gardens by stand up paddleboard, kayak, outrigger canoe or boat, and get a closer look at unique marine populations like Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, endemic fish populations and even humpback whales, when in season.
