One person was killed and at least 30 were injured on Tuesday when Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 flying from London to Singapore was hit with severe turbulence forcing an emergency landing in Bangkok.
Authorities at Bangkok airport named the dead man as 73-year-old British national Geoff Kitchen, who is suspected to have died from a heart attack.
Seven people are also in critical condition after the plane experienced a sudden and dramatic loss of altitude of over one thousand eight hundred meters.
The Boeing 777 Singapore Airlines flight with 211 passengers and 18 crew members, fell into an air pocket while traveling above Myanmar as cabin crew were serving in-flight breakfasts.
One passenger recounted that anyone not wearing a seat belt was "launched into the ceiling", while another said many were seen injured, including with head wounds.
The flight arrived in Singapore at approximately 5.30 AM local time.
The airline said 79 passengers and 11 crew members remain in Bangkok where they are receiving treatment.
