David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust at Ithumba

The Ithumba elephant orphans return to the stockade for the evening to get their last bottle of milk for the day and to sleep inside, where they are protected from all danger. Some are ready to go into the wild at their own pace. The DSWT ex-orphans also come to visit, to get water and to munch on the fresh nutritious grasses provided. A big wild bull hangs out at the waterhole too, which he tends to occupy a bit selfishly. Some of the ex-orphans have wild calves in tow. Towards the end it's getting dark and the ex-orphans return to the wild. At 6am they usually return to see the orphans off into the bush for the day with their keepers.
