Originally the carriage barn for the federalist period mansion located at 63 High Street, the barn was
split off and purchased by Esther Macomber.

In 1944 Ms. Macomber commissioned award winning master landscape designer Dan Kiley, designer of Lincoln Center, the JFK Library and numerous other landmark public and private spaces. "Adhering rigorously to his lifelong tenant that the actions of
humans are integral to the natural environment in which we live..." In 1977, Kiley was awarded the
National Medal of Arts; the country's highest honor.

Their combined vision for the Macomber property, incorporated the mid --century modern aesthetic
that was characterized by lines and vistas that flow seamlessly from inside to outside. The two story
home blends beautifully with it's surrounding gardens, terraces and outdoor rooms. Originally designed
to accommodate livestock, the property has fascinating relics of previous barns and meadows.

The majority of the homes abutting it on "the Ridge" section of High St had large deep lots with up to 10
acres of land used for livestock and kitchen gardens, providing a massive sort of common pasture. As the
city grew and farming became less common, Esther Macomber became concerned that this back land
was at risk of subdivision and development, so in 1993 she not only donated a covenant to Essex County
Greenbelt to protect her property from future development, but also convinced her neighbors to do the
same creating an assemblage of protected properties that to this day and going forward for perpetuity
will be protected.

In 2008 the current owners purchased the property and embarked on the mission of restoring and
updating the property with deference to its original design, that included not only the house but the
grounds. Using pieces of granite reclaimed from the barn relics, the property was redefined, taking an
over grown area of the garden and converting it to a bocce court.

Other pieces of granite when used to fabricate the fountain that greets visitors and creates a backdrop of sound that lets you know right away that you have entered an enchanting oasis. Using the old barn door the owners cleverly created a visual
break between the landscaped and more naturalized back pasture.

Through the pergola you are led to the main entrance of the house. The light strewn entry foyer has
the original concreted floor that was decades ahead of its time. Down the hall you enter the family
room surrounded by window that provide an ever changing garden views. The anchor of the space is
the masonry mass that contains two "Russian Furnaces" one facing the family room and another in the
dining area. Both have the original tile work and are designed to generate as much heat as possible
using baffles built into the top and bottom allowing air to flow through the heated chimney mass.

Up a half flight takes you to the open main living area- with smoked a glass room divider; and a new
kitchen with the clean lines. The kitchen is all new, with silestone counters, new appliances and
streamlined flat panel white cabinets, overlooking the grounds.

The great home office with the original cabinetry and built-in seating also converts to a double bed for quests.

Upstairs there is a large dream laundry room with lots of closets and room for a home work out area.

Enter the master suite and again enjoy the vista of the grounds and streaming sunlight, and wonderful
wall of custom built in closets.

The master bath is all new as well with a large shower with 2 rainfall showerheads and a pebble floor.

Two of the bedrooms have the original built-in beds with adjacent bookcases. There are also two other large bedrooms for a total of 7 rooms on the second floor any one of which would make a great studio or workspace.

Throughout the house and grounds, attention to detail is spectacular. As with any great design, the
process to create it is very complicated; but the final product makes the viewer feel as though there is
absolute simplicity. Therein lies the magic that creates is truly an enchanting property.
