Hicazkar Saz Eseri - Oud (Izzik Gan-Israel) & Qanun (Mumin Sesler- Turkey)
Hicazkar Saz Eseri- A vivid interpretation of oud player Izzik Gan and qanun player Mumin Sesler.
Both Oud and Qanun are played in Turkish music, ClassicalOttoman Turkish music up until pop/rock song of the mainstream music of today's artists.
Oud and Qanun are also two of the main instruments in Arab music.
So what is the difference between Turkish and Arabic classical music?
Turkish classical music uses maqams and usul’s while Arabic music uses a relatively limited number of maqams. ( Ajam, Sikah, Bayati, Nahawand, Rast, Hijaz, Saba, Kurd, Nawa Athar)
Improvisation skill and artist virtuosity ( musically and technically) have the main importance in Arab classical music which we name “tarab”.
In classical Turkish music, improvisation is also important in forms of “gazel” and “taqsim” and artistic capacity (voice or virtuosity) is very much valued; it is not as a big milestone as it is for “tarab”.
BUt in unlike Arab music, the Turkish Ottoman music has a larger number of maqams and other rules of composition. There are more than 600 maqams that have been recognized and used by now.
Turkish classical music is taught in conservatories, the most well known and respected one is Üsküdar Musiki Cemiyeti in Instanbul.
The Turkish oud is differing from an Arabic oud in its timbre; its sound is more treble and brighter because it has tighter strings and thinner soundboard. In addition, its sustain is longer and has a different pitch/tunning than the Arab Oud.
The Qanun also differs in shapes, tunning, number of string and more, by the different regions.
In Israel both Qanun and Oud are integrated in classical music and modern mainstream music.
