Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte flew to Zamboanga City on July 5, 2021, to visit soldiers who were injured in a deadly military plane crash. The C-130 Hercules transport plane with 96 on board was bound for a counter-insurgency operation when it overshot a runway on the southern island of Jolo on July 4. The aircraft burst into flames, killing more than 50 people, including three civilians on the ground.
