Gerald Cleaver's Black Host | Vision Festival 22 (1 of 4)

Gerald Cleaver - drums; Cooper-Moore - piano; Darius Jones - alto sax; Brandon Seabrook - guitar; Pascal Niggenkemper - bass; Guest: Trevor Dunn - bass

Recorded in performance at the 22nd Vision Festival on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Judson Memorial Church, NYC.

"Black Host is not a political project. However, with the very oppressive climate that we face today, everyone is forced to make a stand. There is no passivity allowed, and if we don’t stand and confidently make our voices heard and fight for our right for compassionate justice, we will all drown. We, the members of Black Host, are fortunate to find the best of ourselves on the bandstand. I feel our call to the better nature makes a large, especially unique contribution, and holds the power of change. We are a band. Everyone who listens and hears joins our band."

The Band

Detroit-bred drummer, composer, and bandleader Gerald Cleaver is among the most agile and wide-ranging first-call musicians on the 21st century jazz scene. As a sideman, he has worked with everyone from Jeremy Pelt, Craig Taborn, Miroslav Vitous, and Ivo Perelman to Matthew Shipp, William Parker, and Tomasz Stanko, to name a scant few. He has co-led recordings with Lotte Anker, Andrew Bishop, and Taylor Ho Bynum among others. His own dates, including Adjust, Gerald Cleaver's Detroit, Be It as I See It, and Live at Firehouse 12, reveal a drummer whose discipline is equanimous with his appetite for taking risks.

Cooper-Moore came of age as a musician and active member of the civil rights and peace movements. He became a pivotal member of the Free Jazz movement beginning with the collective Apogee with David S. Ware in the 70s. He has led his own bands Triptych Myth and Digital Primitives and has also been a central figure in William Parker’s In Order to Survive and Gerald Cleaver’s Black Host. Cooper-Moore has written and performed for playwrights such as Rita Dove and Laurie Carlos, and choreographers Joan Miller, Rod Rogers, Marlies Yearby, and Judith Jackson. He is also an important educator, inspiring generations of young artists through Head Start and other music programs around the world. At the Vision Festival in 2017, Arts for Art celebrated Cooper-Moore's Lifetime of Achievement with performances by In Order to Survive, Digital Primitives, and Black Host.

Darius Jones has created a recognizable voice as a saxophonist and composer by embracing individuality and innovation in the tradition of African-American music. With NYC as his base, Jones has toured around the United States, Canada and Europe. Jones was one of Jazz Times' Debut Artists of the Year for 2009 and was featured in the Wall Street Journal in 2011, and in 'DownBeat' in 2012. Jones' 2012 release, Book of Mæ'bul (Another Kind of Sunrise) was listed among NPR's Best Top 10 Jazz Albums of that year. Critics have called him "robustly creative" (Nate Chinen, NYT) and "one of NYC's most incisive and passionate saxists" (Time Out). http://www.jumasultan.net/

Brandon Seabrook is a guitarist, banjoist, and composer living in New York City where he has established himself as one of the most potent guitarists of his generation. His work focuses on the juxtaposition of hallucinatory soundscapes, jump cuts, angular composition, humor, and a massive dynamic range that can change in a nanosecond. He has released seven albums as a leader covering everything from pulverizing art-metal to chamber music, bridging the realms of extreme rock and the classical avant-garde. Described by the New York City Jazz Records as "one of the most adventurous bassists on the scene” and by the Chicago Reader “genius for sound exploration” Franco-German bassist and composer Pascal Niggenkemper creates music bluring the lines between improvised, pure sound, and experimental music with a distinct musical language infused with new bass techniques. http://www.pascalniggenkemper.com

Trevor Dunn is a Brooklyn-based bassist currently Pplaying sporadically in several bands such as Endangered Blood, Dan Weiss’ Starebaby, SpermChurch (duo with Sannety) and various projects under the direction of John Zorn (Nova Quartet, Brian Marsella Trio, Asmodeus). Also sometimes with Wendy Eisenberg, The Melvins, Kris Davis & Oliver Steidle. Also writing music for film, trio-convulsant, a singer/songwriter home recording project, and a piece for loud, amplified solo bass. https://www.trevordunn.net/
