Silver Beach disturbance leads to shooting of teen at Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor

It’s not even Memorial Day but Berrien County Beaches are already seeing crowds and violence.
Public safety officials say it’s time for a change.
On Monday night, hundreds of teens gathered at Silver Beach where police say they were causing a major disturbance.
Forced to leave, the teens made their way over to Jean Klock Park.
That’s where more than 30 shots rang out, and one teen was injured.
Tuesday was a beautiful, quiet day but there are still reminders of the scary situation from Monday.
There was a bullet casing in the parking lot, blood on the sidewalk and in the sand.
Neighbors said it could have been worse.
Hundreds of high school students from South Bend and Mishawaka decided for their Senior Skip Day to go to Silver Beach.
But their day off quickly got out of hand.
“They were dancing on cars and drinking and smoking marijuana and whatnot,” said Dan McGinnis, BHDPS Director.
Berrien County Police made several arrests and forced others to leave.
But the teens didn't go far. They took the celebration to Jean Klock Park where it took a turn.
“Golfers came running off the course and they were saying we hear bullets it's gunshots very quickly ran up here a little bit got the golfers, ran back down the hill and called 911,” said Diana Green, Lives near Jean Klock Park.
More than 30 shots were fired, and one teen was shot in the leg.
Officials said the injury was not life-threatening, but neighbors say enough is enough and it’s time for a change.
“People are very frustrated with the city of Benton Harbour. They just seem very distracted with other things, but this is a very big draw for the community, and the city doesn't take it seriously in my opinion,” said Green.
Benton Harbor Police said they didn’t expect the teens to come to Jean Klock Park.
But after Monday’s events, plans are in the works to have a patrol dedicated to the beach and other parks to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
“We of people from all across the country, Iowa, Ohio, California, Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois. They will be safe at Jean Klock Park. This was an aberration and we are going to make sure it stays that way, as well as any other issues that citizens who live around Jean Klock have also complained about having issues,” said McGinnis.
Neighbors say they hope the city takes their concerns seriously and believe spikes, cameras, and a worker at the front gate would be beneficial.
