Blue-ringed octopus flashing its bright warning colors
A greater blue ringed octopus ( Hapalochlaena lunulata ) flashing its bright blue color ring shaped markings on its body. This tiny marine creature is one of the world's most venomous ( potentially deadly !! ) animals. If provoked or handled, it may bite despite its friendly nature. Blue-ringed octopus venom is produced by bacteria in the saliva in the mouth of the octopod. Unfortunately there is no antivenom and after a bite the venom could paralyze and eventually kill an adult human within minutes to a few hours. Death is caused by heart failure due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles. When bitten, victims must be admitted to a hospital as quickly as possible as they will need artificial respiration in order to survive. If the condition of the patient is stabilised with artificial respiration then over time ( several hours to days ) the venom will be completely metabolized by the body itself and the patient or victim will recover completely.
This footage was filmed during a shallow dive at a depth of 4m on Suci's Reef in Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia. The divesite is also famous for the wreck of the USAT ( USS ) Liberty which ran on the Tulamben beach after being hit by a japanese torpedo during the second world war. The ship is now host to many marine species such as this blue-ringed beauty.
Equipment used to make this video: Samsung galaxy S4 with Watershot housing and single Big Blue Black Molly video torch. I can recomment cold water wetsuits even for tropical ocean when doing video for an extended time in shallow water (you simply always stay warm, no matter how long the dive). I like to use competitively priced quality scuba gear such as Mares (regulator), Bare (wetsuit) and Suunto (dive computer). All the underwater stuff you need can be found here:
