Chromatic Harmonica, how to play in every key - A minor & C major

Steve Luff describes how to improvise on the Chromatic Harmonica (C) in the key of A minor & C major. Lesson 1 of 12.

Learn to play the Chromatic Harmonica:
Unlike its diatonic counterpart the Chromatic Harmonica enables the player to perform in all 12 keys. This is incredibly advantageous to Chromatic Harmonica players as they are able to switch musical keys in an instant. Chromatic Harmonicas can be found in all genre’s of music but are often associated strongly with Classical and Jazz music. Whilst simple to achieve a great sound and perform in the key of C major and A minor. This instrument can be challenging when first venturing into exploring all 12 keys.

This video is aimed at introducing beginners to take their first steps playing and understanding the Chromatic Harmonica in all 12 keys. It is also aimed at players who have not yet ventured into improvising on the instrument. The practical approach introduced by myself (Steve Luff) in this video involves utilising the minor pentatonic scales. Minor pentatonic scales are only comprised of five notes and offer players a great flexible approach to improvising on the instrument.

The use of the slide on the Chromatic Harmonica can be daunting. This tutorial not only provides clear examples of when to activate the slide but also offers examples on how it can be used to add musical flavour to your playing technique. Providing you with a rich Jazzy and Bluesy tone.
